Subject taken from 'Le Grazie Vendicate' (Defence of the Graces) by Metastasio (1698-1782). The subject of the companion picture, 'Bacchus and Ariadne,' is from Ovid. Together the pictures form a pictorial representation of the debate on the comparative merits of classical and modern verse.
