Hales monument. The uppermost part shows the body of Sir James Hales the Younger, who died during a naval campaign against Spain in 1589, being committed to the sea. The painting behind the kneeling Alice Hales (d. 1592) is said to show the suicide of Sir James Hales the Elder in the Stour (1554)
