This is a Pied Avocet (Recurvirostra avosetta L.), a species not found in the Ries region around Maihingen. Markus Unsöld, Zoologische Staatssammlung München, kindly suggested that it might have been a vagrant migratory bird, shot and painted (in an unnatural posture) because it was unusual
