RELIGIOUS ICONOGRAPHY
Saints / Cycles / Manuscripts and Prints of the Legenda Aurea / Manuscripts / French translation of Jean de Vignay / Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, Fr. 244-245 (Master of Jacques de Besançon, 1480-1490) / Fr. 244
Further details
According to the Legenda aurea, a devout lady had a vision of the Candlemas liturgy celebrated by Christ in person as priest. This image probably shows the Offertory, during which the saints present returned the candles they had received at the beginning to the priest - the lady refuses to do so and then wakes up holding a candle.
